NEWS: Rep. Jamaal Bowman Encourages Support for Bronx Fire Victims

The Bronx— Today, Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY-16), issued the following statement sending love and support to the community after at least 19 people were killed, including 9 children, and dozens were seriously injured in a horrific fire at an apartment building located in The Bronx. Rep. Bowman stands ready to assist his colleague Rep. Ritchie Torres (NY-15) and Rep. Torres’ constituents during this difficult time.

“My heart goes out to all those affected by this tragedy,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY-16). “This is one of the worst fires we have witnessed in New York City and I am keeping all who have lost loved ones in my thoughts. May our community find strength and healing.”

City and emergency organizations announced they would provide support and resources to displaced residents and victims’ family members, and Rep. Bowman asked the community to assist those affected by one of New York City’s worst fires in decades.

“During this difficult time, I am sending love to everyone impacted by today’s devastating and heartbreaking fire in the Twin Parks North West Complex and stand ready to assist my colleague, Congressman Ritchie Torres, and the entire community as we mourn the lives lost,” added Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY-16).

Recently, Rep. Bowman’s district was impacted by a catastrophic fire that affected many of his constituents in Yonkers, just after Christmas. Congressman Bowman assisted in recovery efforts and helped mobilize efforts to house the displaced families.

Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) Commissioner Daniel Nigro said that a malfunctioning electric space heater sparked the fire. As winter continues, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) is working jointly with Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass) to urge President Biden, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and other legislators to protect consumers from unfairly high heating and energy prices, and expand the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This helps eligible low-income families with home heating costs. It also covers weatherization services, and furnace and chimney cleaning, repair, and replacement.
